Ice Cream Social

West Winfield, NY: The Millers Mills Community is again planning their annual Ice Cream Social for Sunday, July 21, 2024, at Noon. The Millers Mills Grange sponsors the event and feels compelled to carry on this tradition to offer younger generations an opportunity to step back in time and experience a task that their ancestors once did.

The three-day process of making fresh custard into ice cream starts on Thursday with the community coming together to measure, stir, and freeze the locally sourced ingredients into the rich and creamy dessert. The two flavors, chocolate and vanilla, are then frozen in large specially crafted ice cream cylinders to be turned into what Ice Cream Social attendees enjoy on Sunday. The authentic, antique, machines used churn the frozen custard for hours over the course of the weekend, making sure that each batch is perfectly blended and full of flavor.

Visitors to the Grange Hall can purchase ice cream, and food while enjoying blues, folk and Americana music by RayJ. Raffle tickets will be on sale for a Poly Rocker, by Jeff’s Handcrafted Amish Furniture. All items are cash sale. Along with the food, music and games; weather pending.

We encourage you to bring a lawn chair or picnic blanket to make yourself comfortable and enjoy all that our old-fashioned ice cream social has to offer.

Millers Mills is in the town of Columbia in extreme southern Herkimer County. The Grange is located at 107 Finger Ave, West Winfield, NY. Watch for signs to Millers Mills Rd off Route 51 or Jones Road off Jordanville Road. Parking and admission are free. Dress for the weather and bring your camera.

Ice Harvest 2023

Millers Mills Ice Harvest for February 12, 2023 Is Off Again

The inconsistent winter weather has once again forced the Millers Mills Ice Harvest to be canceled.  Although there is some ice on the pond, the danger is too great for both workers or visitors.  The current weather forecast for rain the coming week does not guarantee sufficient ice. The rain will also melt what snow we have left for the sleighs.

The ice harvest was scheduled for Sunday, February 12, 2023.  The Millers Mills Grange, which sponsors the event, is one of the few remaining in Herkimer County.  The annual ice harvest began as a necessity, was reborn as a fun community event, and grew into a hands on history lesson for the public after Charles Kuralt attended the ice harvest and gave the event national recognition on his TV show, “On the Road with Charles Kuralt”.

The lack of ice will have no effect on the Grange’s Homemade Ice Cream Social scheduled for July 16, 2023.
